26 Below, Kimberly Woodhouse

26 Below Review

What happens if a disaster happens when the Alaskan temperature dips below zero? That’s the premise Kimberly Woodhouse explores in 26 Below.

The concept of 26 Below was fascinating: what if there was a cybersecurity threat when the temperatures dip below freezing? Are the authorities prepared to handle it? In this day and age when everything is so dependent on technology,

I was intrigued by the concept. Sadly, I didn’t connect with any of the characters and found myself not caring what happened to them one way or other.

Darcie had the formidable taks of trying to put plans in place in the event of a cyber attack or other emergency. Her task becomes more difficult when a mystery woman begins predicting a disaster when the temperature hits 26 below zero.
This and other factors cause more challenges for Darcie and her team as they race against the clock.

Jason is the cybersecurity specialist who has been hired to tighten their security. Things get difficult for Jason when he realizes that whatever’s happening, his brother is smack in the middle of it.

Jason is drawn to Darcie but her walls are so high, he couldn’t break it down. I didn’t believe these characters had sufficient chemistry between them.

For most of the book, Darcie was stonewalling Jason or being standoffish which made the romance feel inauthentic.

The main “bad guy” remains at large at the end of this book. Since this is the first in a series, it can be assumed that readers will learn more about him in later books.

Readers of 26 Below will be reminded that as much as we want to control things, we can’t.  But until we recognize that God is sovereign, we’re doomed to chase after a control we’ll never have.

I received an advanced reader’s copy from the publisher through NetGalley and Just Read Tours; a positive review was not required.

About 26 Below

In her new role as Emergency Operations Center director for Fairbanks, Alaska, Darcie Phillips prevents disasters. But none of her training can prepare her for the terror that’s coming.

As a cybersecurity specialist, Jason Myers is determined to ferret out any threats to the town he now calls home–and that includes his reckless brother and his ecoterrorist friends.

When an old woman’s wild prediction–widespread destruction as soon as the Fairbanks temperature falls to 26 below–hits national headlines, neither Darcie nor Jason sees a real risk to anything but tourism.

Then the bodies start dropping.

Darcie is relying on her experience and intelligence to stop a killer; Jason is relying on God to guide the way. They’ll have to work together to find the truth and prevent their Alaskan town from becoming a city of nightmares. The first in a thrilling new suspense series from best-selling author Kimberley Woodhouse, 26 Below will delight fans of Lynnette Eason, Irene Hannon, and Lynn Blackburn.
