A Light on the Hill, Connilyn Cossette

A Light on the Hill Review

In A Light on the Hill by Connilyn Cossette, we pick up the story of Moriyah, who we first meet in Wings of the Wind.

With the brand of the Canaanite goddess on her face, Moriyah barricades herself away from her people and every chance of love. When her father arranges a match for her, she’s cautiously optimistic. But things go horribly wrong and she’s forced to run for her life.

Darek was immediately drawn together, but situations pressed them apart. When he joined Moriyah on her flight across Canaan, he must decide what he feels about her.

The romance between Moriyah and Darek was bittersweet because there were so many things holding them apart. Also, with the uncertainty about Moriyah’s life, there was no guarantee they would be together.

Moriyah’s relationship with God had been affected by the wounds she suffered in Jericho. As she withdrew from the world, she also withdrew from YWH. And isn’t that like us? When we’re hurt, instead of pressing closer to God, we want to pull away from Him.

Moriyah reminds us that healing can only be found in the presence of God and so we are to draw nearer to Him when in hard times.

Readers of A Light on the Hill will be reminded that God never fails. Even in the midst of our darkest moments, He’s right there with us. The key is that we need to look for God and keep clinging to Him even when our faith flags.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed Rachel Botchan’s performance.

About A Light on the Hill

After being branded during the battle of Jericho, Moriyah has had no prospects for marriage – until now. She hopes to please the man, but things go horribly wrong and she is forced to flee for her life. Seeking safety at one of the Levitical cities of refuge, she is unprepared for the dangers she faces, and the enemies – and allies – she encounters on her way.

Seven years ago, Moriyah was taken captive in Jericho and branded with the mark of the Canaanite gods. Now the Israelites are experiencing peace in their new land, but Moriyah has yet to find her own peace. Because of the shameful mark on her face, she hides behind her veil at all times and the disdain of the townspeople keeps her from socializing. And marriage prospects were out of the question…until now.

Her father has found someone to marry her, and she hopes to use her love of cooking to impress the man and his motherless sons. But when things go horribly wrong, Moriyah is forced to flee. Seeking safety at one of the newly-established Levitical cities of refuge, she is wildly unprepared for the dangers she will face, and the enemies – and unexpected allies – she will encounter on her way.
