His Perfect Wife is the prequel for my Orange Valley series that will be published in 2023. But I didn’t intend to write this story.
I probably shouldn’t have started it that way, so let me explain. In 2021, I got an idea about a blue-haired girl who fell in love with a pastor.
When I began writing Brianna’s story, found out she had an obnoxious older sister named Tonya. I didn’t think that one day I’d be writing Tonya’s love story.
Brainstorming His Perfect Wife
Fast forward a few months. I had written all three books I wanted to publish in the Orange Valley series but did not know what I’d offer to readers who hadn’t yet read my work. I knew it needed to be a good story but still had no idea what.
Around the same time, I’d been overhauling His Perfect Match for the umpteenth time, I wondered…
What if I told Tonya and Mac’s story? (Though back then, his name had been Tom. Yes, I had to go through all three books and change his name.)
I started thinking about what Tonya’s love story would look like, knowing I had to account for the tension between her and her sister. What could I write that would be a satisfying love story that also hinted at the tension between the sisters?
The great thing was that after writing His Perfect Match, I had a pretty good feel for Tonya’s character and more than a hint of Mac’s. There’d also been some hints of what their relationship and family dynamics were like. All I needed to do was go backward in time.
His Perfect Wife was born. Since this was supposed to be a prequel, most readers would expect it to be a short story. But as I brainstormed and outlined (much of what did not end up in the actual book), I realized Tonya’s story was much too complicated for a novella.
Which is just like her. When you read His Perfect Wife, you’ll realize that this petite woman has a gigantic personality.
Themes and Tropes in His Perfect Wife
His Perfect Wife is a second-chance romance as Mac and Tonya rekindle the relationship with their first love. The couple will have to resolve the issues in their shared past if they’re going to have the happily-ever-after they deserve.
His Perfect Wife will remind readers we need to trust God to take care of our problems rather than try to solve them ourselves.
