Character Interview: Gabrielle

Welcome to the blog! Today, we’re interviewing Gabrielle Wallace from His Perfect Family.

Q: If you could go back and give your 18-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

A: I’d remind her that patience is a virtue. That things don’t always happen in the time we’d like them to.

Q: Who inspires you? Why?

A: Caleb. Every day, I wake up, and there’s this little human depending on me.

Sure, he only cares that he’s comfortable, fed, and has enough toys to play with, but…

I have to make good choices–ones that will mean that he has the best life possible.

Q: How could you create more balance in your life?

A: Oh. *sighs* I dream of balance, but like so many parents of young children, I’m not sure how to manage that.

One thing I’m working on, now that Theo and I are married, is taking a few hours for myself each week.

I need to rediscover who Gabrielle is when she’s not Caleb’s mom.

Q: What is the hardest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your life?

A: I’d have to say parenting–not that I’ve overcome it, but it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.

Q: Why is that?

A: I think because it’s all-consuming. This child demands everything from you, and if you don’t set boundaries, you can lose the very essence of who you are.

Then there are so many things that could go wrong. What if I make a mistake? Twenty of them? How will it affect my son? How many of my choices have already impacted him negatively?

*shakes head

It’s enough to drive you crazy or at least make it impossible for you to sleep at night.

Q: What goals are you pursuing right now?

A: I wish I could tell you I have a list of goals I’m pursuing. That I have a 5-year plan that I’m working on accomplishing, but honestly…

I’m just surviving. Trying to make the best of the life I have now. I realize that each day is a gift, and so I’m trying to just appreciate that.

Besides, I ain’t got time to have goals. I’m too busy running after my son.

Q: What 5 people would you bring with you if you were stuck on a desert island?

A: My parents because they’re my greatest supporters. I can’t imagine being stranded somewhere and not being able to talk to them.

Caleb, of course, because *gestures to self
Hello. Mom. *laughs

Brianna, because she’s my best friend and I know if she’s there we’ll find some way to have some fun.

*taps chin

And the last person…

I’m just kidding. I know exactly who it’s going to be. Theo. Because then my whole family will be together–which would be perfect.

There you have it, friend. I hope you enjoyed Gabrielle’s interview as much as I did. Are there any questions you wish she’d answered?

Share them with me in the comments. Maybe we can have a follow-up conversation. His Perfect Family releases on May 26, 2022.
