Q: Introduce yourself to the readers.
A: Martin Wallace, CEO of Wallace Industries. We’re in the food business.
Q: How did you meet your spouse?
A: Ruth and I met when I interviewed her to be my secretary.
*eyes twinkle
Though I’m sure she’d be offended if you referred to her as anything other than an administrative assistant. The woman loves her titles.
She came into the interview and not only began telling me how to organize my office, she also told me how I should be interviewing her.
*laughs
At one point, I wasn’t sure if I was interviewing her or if she was interviewing me.
Needless to say, I hired her on the spot. Best decision of my life.
Q: Would you choose a safe & boring life over an adventurous but risky one?
A: I don’t think it’s possible to choose a safe life–even the most boring life is not without risk.
Q: What was your favorite subject in school?
A: *grins
Would you believe me if I told you Physical Education? It’s true. For a long time, I thought I’d grow up to be a footballer, at least for a few years.
*shrugs
Then my father got sick and I was put on the fast-track to replace him as CEO.
Q: If you had to write a book tomorrow, what would you write about?
A: *strokes chin
I think I’d write a book about all the things I’ve learned about running a Fortune 500 company. Not the things people usually talk about like investing in the right things and so forth.
*waves hand
No, I’d talk about the impact success–and failure has on a person. How it affects your relationships and the power it has to impact your character.
Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned over your career?
A: That the people at the bottom of your organization chart can make or break your business. Take care of them and they’ll treat your business like it’s their own. Treat them poorly and you’ll reap what you sow.
Q: Would you rather have no money or no love?
A: I don’t know if I could choose. In my life they’ve been so closely intertwined, it’s hard to get rid of one without impacting the other.
Well, there you have it friend. I hope you enjoyed this interview with Martin as much as I did. You can learn more about Martin in His Perfect Family which releases on May 26, 2023.
