Character Interview: Theo

Today we’d like to welcome Theo from His Perfect Family to the blog. Welcome, Theo. Introduce yourself to my readers.

My name’s Theo McPherson. I’m the son of Yvonne and Bruce McPherson. My parents had two sons before me,  but I’m the best.

*grins

Q: What has been your favorite job you’ve held?

A: Okay, so I’ve only had two: working for my brother Everton in his construction business and being a firefighter.

*chuckles

Wait, never mind. I forget I do other things. My answer’s still the same. I love what I do now—being a firefighter is the best job in the world.

Q: What do you love about being a firefighter?

A: It’s a good way for me to give back to my community. I enjoy knowing that what I do matters and affects lives.

Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career?

A: That things are often more fragile than they appear. I think that applies to people, too.

Most of us are wearing some type of mask and so it’s easy to believe a person has everything together.

But we should all remember that the same effort we took so that all our trauma doesn’t show on our faces is the same level of effort the other person took.

Be gentle on approach.

Q: If you could have tea with any historical figure, who would you choose?

A: Oh, man.

*scrubs a hand over his face

Can I choose someone from the Bible? I can’t think of anyone I’d like to spend time with…other than Jesus. But if I could spend five minutes with Job, I’d ask him how he found the strength to persevere

*stares out into the distance

I mean, he lost almost everything and still remained faithful. A couple of bad things happen to me and I start questioning my faith. I’d really like to know Job’s secret.

Q: What’s one lesson your job has taught you that you think everyone should learn at some point in their life?

A: That life is precious. One minute you can have everything and the next second *snaps fingers

Poof! It all goes up in flames.

Q: What are the top 3 characteristics you consider when hiring teammates?

A: That’s a great question.

*strokes chin

The three characteristics that would be at the top of my list would be integrity, reliability, and loyalty. If we had those three things, we’d be fine.

Q: What occupation (other than your own) would you like to try?

A: *glances furtively over his shoulder

Don’t tell my wife, but I’d like to try smoke jumping.

*shrugs

Technically, it seems like the same job, but I imagine there’d be a rush of adrenaline before you jumped into the fire.

Q: You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant?

A: Why would anybody give me an elephant?

*holds palm up

It’s okay, I’ll play your game. If someone gave me an elephant and I could afford to feed and shelter it…

*smirks

And no one calls Animal Services on me…

I’d rent rides.

*shrugs

May as well play circus master and make some money.

*chuckles

I’m going to need money to feed my new pet.
