Raised by Senator Elliott, Avery has never doubted her grandfather is the man of integrity and faith she’s always believed him to be . . . until the day she finds him standing with a gun over the body of a dead man. To make matters worse, Avery’s just discovered a billing discrepancy for materials supposedly purchased for construction of the Lago de Cobre Dam.

Desperate for answers, Avery contacts FBI Special Agent Marc Wilkins for help. As Marc works to identify the dead man Avery saw, threats toward Avery create a fresh sense of urgency to pinpoint why someone wants to silence her. With a hurricane approaching the Texas coast and the structural integrity of the Lago de Cobre Dam called into question, time is running out to get to the bottom of a sinister plot that could be endangering the lives of not only Avery and her loved ones but the entire community. Less

When Avery Elliott sees her beloved grandfather standing over a dead body with a gun in his hand, her perfectly ordered life begins to fall apart. At her grandfather’s request, she seeks help from FBI agent Marc Wilkins.

There were a lot of twists and turns in this novel, but the FBI spent so much time collaborating and getting advice from civilians that it felt more like a cozy mystery than a romantic suspense.

I did not connect with the characters. I felt as though I was being told what to think instead of being able to draw my own conclusions about the characters.

The plot also felt forced as though things were not unfolding in a logical way but was instead being done to create shock and awe. There were a couple of red herrings to distract from the real villain but when the explanations of their innocence came, it felt contrived.

The romance was very mild and did not evolve naturally. When Avery and Marc got together, I wasn’t convinced that they would have a happily ever after.

Readers will be reminded that God is watching out for us and that we will make it through trials if we allow Him to carry our burdens.
I received an advanced reader’s copy from the publisher through NetGalley; a positive review was not required.
