The First Line of Caught by the Sheriff

HAD FAYE DONOVAN known she’d be a child kidnapper and fugitive by afternoon, she would have skipped her second double shot of espresso that morning.

Okay, the first line of Caught by the Sheriff had me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to know more.

  • Who was Faye Donovan and why was she kidnapping a child?
  • Who had she kidnapped? Whose child was it?
  • Who was she running/hiding from?
  • Why was she hiding from that person?
  • Will she get away with kidnapping this child?
  • Where is the child’s mother and why isn’t she the one making off with her child? (This question becomes of even greater concern as the novel progresses and there’s no sign of her. Is the child’s mother also in danger? Is she dead?)

This first line of Caught by the Sheriff held a hint of humor and a glimpse into Faye’s personality. She is someone who thought she needed coffee to jumpstart her day and ended up having to do something that was not originally on her to-do list.

The first line of Caught by the Sheriff gives the reader the impression that Faye is not someone who would kidnap a child or become a fugitive without a good reason and so we are curious to know the circumstances which led to her actions.

How this played out in the book

There was always a sense that Faye was looking over her shoulder waiting for her temporary ideal to be shattered. Faye was always looking over her shoulders trying to see if she was being pursued. She was never truly able to relax because if she got too relaxed it could mean her freedom and possibly the life of her sister and niece.
