What would you do if you overheard the plot to kill someone who was relatively well-know and also related to you? The first line of Dead Silence by Robin Carroll began with such a situation.

The First Line of Dead Silence
“Stop worrying. Lilliana York will be taken care of tonight. Permanently. Just as you instructed.”
The first line of Dead Silence drops you right in the middle of the story. One of the characters is overhearing an assassination plot and there are oodles of questions:
- Who is Lilliana York?
- Who is planning to kill her?
- Why do they want Lilliana dead?
- Who is the person overhearing the assassination plan?
- What will that person do with the information?
- Will they be able to stop the assassination?
- Will the person planning the murder realize they had been overheard?
- What will they do?
As you read a bit more in the story, you quickly learn that the murder plot wasn’t overheard so much as it was read. Elise is a lip reader who saw someone planning to kill Lilliana York who happens to be a senator and her mother in law (don’t worry I’m not giving away any spoilers all of this information is in the blurb).
How the First Line of Dead Silence Plays Out in the Story
This “overheard” conversation is the entire premise for the story. Elise overheard an assassination plot and her life changed forever as a result. After Elise’s mother-in-law is murdered, she reports what she had overheard to the FBI and somehow comes into the crosshairs of the killer. From that moment on, she and her son are in danger from an unknown enemy.

About Dead Silence
Political games can be deadly…
Elise Carmichael is a court sign language interpreter who reads lips all the time. As a widow with a young son who is deaf, lip-reading is simply second nature, until the day she reads the lips of someone on the phone discussing an attempt to be made on a senator’s life—a senator who just happens to be her mother-in-law.
Before she can decide what she needs to do, she receives the information that her son is rushed to the ER and she must leave. Then she later sees the news report that her mother-in-law has been shot and killed. But when she comes forward, her life, as well as her son’s life, may now be in the crosshairs of the assassin.
