The Price of Valor

The Price of Valor Review

What would you do if the spouse you thought was dead was in trouble? What if you had to choose between them and the safety of your nation?  That was the premise of The Price of Valor by Susan May Warren and oh boy, does it take you on a rollercoaster ride!

My Review of The Price of Valor

Okay, so this book was chock-full of drama, complications, and plot twists. I loved the way Susan May Warren wove the different subplots together to make a powerful finale to the Global Search and Rescue series.

The Characters in The Price of Valor

Many of the characters in The Price of Valor were introduced in the previous books, but the focus was on Signe and Hamilton. We get a lot of their history through flashbacks as both characters reflect on events they went through together at various points in their story.

Signe had been through so much. A less strong-willed person would have crumbled under the weight of everything, but she just kept going. I liked that regardless of what she thought about herself, she never stopped doing what she believed was right for her family and the greater good.

Because of all the things she had experienced, she struggled to believe she was loved and worthy of being loved but Ham…

The Global Search and Rescue series is about men and women using their gifts and abilities to serve others. In short, they’re heroes. And Hamilton is the best of the team. He’s the heart behind the organization; the one urging his team members to choose God and to seek after Him when their faith wavered or things looked tough. In this story, we got a behind-the-scenes look at what created the man and what he had persevered through to become the man he is.

As in The Way of the Brave, I enjoyed Jenny’s and Orion’s characters and liked seeing more of their story played out. Their relationship had so many ups and downs it was interesting to see.

The Themes in The Price of Valor

One of the major themes in this book was forgiveness. It kept showing up on the pages as several characters had to forgive others and even themselves. Playing alongside the theme of forgiveness was the theme that guilt and shame will destroy you if you let it. We’ve all done things we wished we hadn’t, but we can’t change them so the only thing we can do is ask for forgiveness and move on. But oh, the enemy likes to rub our faces in the muck of our past. Thank God Jesus keeps showing up, wiping the muck away and reminding us that we are loved by Him.

Another major theme was that true love pursues you. In a lot of ways, the relationship between Ham and Signe was the story of Hosea and his wife. Ham loved Signe, she ran away from him. He found her, loved on her some more, she ran away, and the cycle continued. Through their relationship, we are reminded of how God loves us and will pursue us to the depths of the earth.

At the end of the book, I knew what the bad guy wanted, at least the lead goal, but I didn’t know why. I wish this had been something that was at least revealed. Still, I was glad that justice prevailed and the good guys won the war.

While The Price of Valor is an exciting story on its own, it’s best to read the series in order as there are storylines that continue from the earlier books. You may be able to figure it out, but it will be so much more fun to read it for yourself 😉.

I received an advanced reader’s copy from the publishers as part of the launch team; a positive review was not required. Get your copy of The Price of Valor.
